You know it takes more than self-care to reduce compassion fatigue…. let us help you!

What is Caring Safely®?

Caring Safely® is a comprehensive online group training program that teaches you how to build compassion fatigue resiliency.   While bubble baths and pedicures are fun, they are not enough.

Whether you’re a social worker, nurse, teacher, or in another helping field, you’ll learn practical strategies that you can use on a daily basis, at home and at work.

Sarah, Social Worker, United States

In my years as a social worker, I’ve worked with a lot of challenging populations and issues such as severe mental illness, domestic violence, chronic illness, and sexual abuse.  I’ve had periods of severe compassion fatigue, burnout, and vicarious trauma to the point where I had thought of leaving the field.

I have gone to many training on compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma during my years as a social worker, and have learned some valuable information, but not until I took the Caring Safely course have I felt that I have the tools to apply to my daily life and work as a clinician. I loved all the modules and worksheets, and in particular I really appreciate having the supportive Facebook group to share with others about how we are applying the things we are learning.

I highly recommend this course- I will be using the tools for years to come, as I truly feel I can stay in the field much longer using what I have learned!

Is Caring Safely a personal or professional program?

Caring Safely has two options:

Personal Training Program (modules 1-6) is for you if:

  • you want to learn how to build compassion fatigue resiliency

Professional Training Program (modules 1-12) is for you if:

  • you want to learn how to build compassion fatigue resiliency and;
  • you’re a supervisor or manager and want to bring compassion fatigue protective strategies into the workplace and/or
  • if you’re a helping professional who wants to develop an expertise in compassion fatigue so you can develop and deliver your own workshops.
v

“The structure of it was wonderful. The clear explanation of the concepts of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction that then lead into a vast array of strategies. I found that I was able to easily connect the practice with the theory of it and personalise it to my own experiences. The Facebook group has also been excellent.”

The Caring Safely Modules

Personal Training Program:  Modules 1-6

Professional Training Program: Modules 1-12

In this module we go deep into the concepts of Caring Safely including the good, the bad and the ugly.

You’ll be introduced to the practice of Integrating and Implementing the concepts, which will run through the remainder of the program to ensure you can take the information and apply it you your own experiences.

You’ll learn a framework that is the foundation for the rest of the program that is designed to set you up for long term change and the ability to practice Sustainable Caring.

In module two I take you even deeper into your thoughts and beliefs about being a helping professional and have you get clear on your personal values.

I know some people might want to jump right into strategies, but over the years in teaching this, I’ve learned that if we don’t get this foundational work done, people aren’t likely to stick with the strategies for more than a few weeks (if that!).

In later modules, I will be asking you to try things that may be difficult, or cause you some stress/anxiety. Things such as setting boundaries at work, saying “no” and letting go of perfectionism.

Module two is a key factor in giving you the strength and motivation to get through those anxiety provoking new behaviors.

In module three we focus more on the vicarious trauma and vicarious posttraumatic growth that can come from being exposed to pain, suffering and trauma on a regular basis.

What is different about Caring Safely, is that we place a strong focus on the good that can come from our work and you begin to practice strategies to enhance that personal growth.

Module four is all about self-care. You may have heard me say that managing compassion fatigue “takes way more than self-care”. Here we’ll talk about a concept I created called flexi-self-care, which is where I start with everyone.

You’ll go through an exercise I created called Subjective Units of Nourishment (SUNs). Past Caring Safely students have said that this is one of their favourite strategies. It’s designed to fit well with flexi-self-care and to change the way you think about self-care overall.

In Module five you’ll get a variety of strategies to protect yourself from vicarious trauma, or secondary traumatic stress. I also teach a vicarious trauma action plan in case you find yourself exposed and feeling the symptoms.
In module six we focus on the role of compassion and self-compassion. I specifically put this module last because I know many people (helpers especially) may struggle with self-compassion. I then guide you through a process to get clear on what you want your future to look like and how to takes steps towards that.
Learn a trauma informed approach to organizational health and how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) impact psychological health and safety in the workplace. This includes a review of the types of stress (workplace, traumatic and personal) as well as the organizational risk factors and protective factors for compassion fatigue.  Both managers and clinical supervisors learn how to address compassion fatigue from the grassroots (bottom up).
Learning how to address compassion fatigue in the workplace is all well and good, but if you don’t have any support from leadership, you might not get very far in implementing your newfound expertise.  In this module you’ll review the role of a manager who balances multiple needs (stakeholder, organizational, staff and personal). You will learn a framework to assess the readiness for change within the organization and strategies to create a desire for addressing compassion fatigue at the organizational level.
In this module you’ll review the role of clinical supervision and review strategies to address the individual risk and protective factors of compassion fatigue.  You will learn additional strategies to help staff (individually and as a group) to process some of the exposure to trauma/grief they have experienced as well as how to build their personal resiliency and mental strength.  Examples of clinical supervision forms/contracts are provided.  You will learn a framework for assessing individual readiness for change and strategies to help individuals increase their desire to make healthy changes to address compassion fatigue.
In this module you may begin to feel as though you are back in school.  We are getting into the research and foundations for the concepts in Caring Safely.  It’s important for you to have this solid foundation as you shift into your role as a Compassion Fatigue Expert.  You can expect additional readings and assignments that ensure you have a solid grasp of the content.
In Module 11 you will learn how to break up all of the content you are now an expert in, and create different forms of presentations/workshops.  This could include a 15 minute presentation at work, a 60 minute keynote, a half day workshop or a full day workshop.  You will learn how to take your knowledge and transfer it into materials that are easy to understand and promote an engaged experience for your audience.
In this module we will review the Business of Compassion Fatigue.  This includes how you can market (tell people) about your expertise so they will hire you to teach them.  I promise, it won’t require you to do a cheesy…. “But Wait – There’s More” infomercial promo.  The approach will be individualistic and authentic in nature so you don’t feel “fake” about what you’re offering.  You’ll also learn about different business models and type of business you can begin with your newfound expertise!

In 2007 I was at the height of compassion fatigue and near burnout. I didn’t know what vicarious trauma was and had no strategies for protecting myself. I just knew that I felt raw and exhausted and wanted to hide from everyone.

Then in 2008 I learned about compassion fatigue and burnout and became fascinated with it. Where many in my field would have left, I went in the opposite direction. I dived into the world of compassion fatigue/compassion satisfaction. I took two separate trainings and spent years doing research, offering live workshops, online programs, presentations and individual coaching.

I’m excited to present you with the third edition of my program called Caring Safely with the latest research and even more strategies to help you stay safe and love your work.

What if I’m not sure if I have Compassion Fatigue or Burnout?

You will learn the difference between Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, Vicarious Trauma and Burnout. We will cover the signs and symptoms so you can see if any of them fit with what you are experiencing.

You will see where on the continuum from Compassion Satisfaction to Compassion Fatigue to Burnout you land.

Who should register for this program?

This workshop is for (but not limited to):

Health Care Providers – nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, massage therapists, pharmacists, physicians, palliative care workers.

Mental Health Clinicians – psychologists, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, educational counsellors, psychiatric nurses, addiction counsellors, crisis counsellors, intake workers.

Education:  teachers, special ed teachers, teacher aids, school counsellors, leadership/administration in schools.

Community Services: child protection workers, case managers, home care support workers, community social workers.

Who should NOT register for this program?

I say this with the utmost compassion for what you are experiencing –  if you’re already at burnout and are struggling with severe mental health issues including; depression (any thoughts of suicide or self-harm), post traumatic stress disorder, addictions or other psychiatric illness, you will be better assisted by connecting (or continuing) with your local health care team.  This program is a psychoeducational program and is not a substitute for therapy.  The nature of online modalities does not allow for the provision of services for severe mental health concerns.  I do wish you all the best in your recovery.

How much time does the Caring Safely program take?

Please note that this is not a, quick fix, instant result program.  This program is part educational, part behavioral and full of personal growth.  You won’t learn two or three strategies and be protected from Compassion Fatigue forever.  Most Caring Safely students have reviewed the material at various times and continue to implement the strategies in new ways that work for them.  This program provides you with information and strategies and invites you to personalize and integrate them into your life.  All this to say, the more you put in, the more you will grow and be protected.  Okay, rant over;)

What kind of technology do I need?

In order to access the content each week, you will need to log into a program with a username and password that you will create when you register.  If you have logged in to my Online Health Hub and watched my free video training, then you have everything you need to access the course material.

There are video and audio files that you can watch/listen to. There are worksheets in Adobe Format that you can download (Adobe has a free program you can download to open the documents). Please log into the Online Health Hub and ensure you can watch the videos and download the handouts.

You should have a basic understanding of logging into programs with a user name and password for this program.

Technically, these can be done on a desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone. Keep in mind there are worksheets to print in each module.

For the Live Q&As you will be emailed a link to directly access the online classroom.  If you attended any of my free online classes, it’s the same set up.  This can be done from a desktop, laptop, tablet or phone.  You would want to be near a stronger internet connection for the live Q&As.

Do I get Continuing Education Credits for this program?

In order to complete a quiz for a certificate of completion, you are required to complete the pre and post assessment.  This is because certain regulatory colleges require a pre and post assessment in order to qualify for continuing education credits.  If you complete the pre and post assessment, you will have access to a final quiz and, upon successful completion, you will be given a certificate of completion for the hours of your Caring Safely Program (Personal, Supervisor/Manager, Expert, Deluxe Expert). Please note: It is up to you to see if your regulatory college will accept this training.
